Our Mission—Serving Those Who’ve Served

March 2010

Text Box: Dear Student Veterans and Supporters:

Happy Saint Patricks Day!

Amongst an unprecedented barrage of snowstorms, Operation College Promise (OCP) hosted a production of “Into the Fire” in collaboration with Montclair State University on February 5, 2010. Dr. Susan Cole, President of Montclair was on hand to welcome the nearly 150 attendees, including MSU alum and State Senator Barbara Buono, to the University’s exceptional performing arts venue—Kasser Theater.

Despite threatening weather reports of a “crippling” snowstorm, students, faculty, veterans and friends alike packed the venue for the gripping performance by actors Carrie Gibson and Tony Curry. The performance (see review and photos) explored the challenging plight of our returning vets as they manage disabilities, combat related trauma while integrating into their families, communities, educational institutions, and the workforce. Afterwards, attendees discussed the impact of the content—several as veterans themselves.

You can listen to the radio interview between Jack Fanous of The GI Go Fund and Carrie at http://www.veteransnow.org/. Tune in Saturday mornings for other current topics related to veterans.

Other Happenings:

OCP joined about 100 vendors and 400 veterans for a jobs and education fair at the Lawrenceville Armory on March 5, 2010. The program was offered specifically for Guard members from the 50th and 150th who returned from deployment over the past year. It was a great day meeting and greeting veterans and supporters alike.

Coming Events:

The next OCP event will take place on April 21, 2010 at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. A webinar entitled, “Academic Advising Strategies for Returning Veterans” will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room from 1:00—2:30 p.m.. The program is designed with the needs of Academic Advisors and Coordinators of Faculty Advising in mind, but all are welcome to attend. Additional information on this program will be distributed shortly.

Veterans for Education (V4E) will be hosting a run in memory of Jeremy Kane, USMC, who was killed in Afghanistan by an IED. Proceeds will fund a memorial at Rutgers University. For additional information, go to the following link:
