November 2009—Issue No. 3

Text Box: Dear Student Veterans and Supporters:

November marked the one-year anniversary of the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities’ veterans’ project—the precursor for OCP. To mark the occasion, the program launched its “Thank a Veteran” project acknowledging Pre 9/11 veterans assisting active servicemembers and/or their families. Edward Gorman, who landed on Normandy during the D-Day invasion and Thomas Mahoney, a Pearl Harbor survivor were the recipients of the 2009 fall award.

OCP also adopted a National Guard unit, the 150th Aviation Battalion, based in West Trenton, New Jersey and held a card signing/donation drive for the soldiers who have been deployed since February 2009. A special thanks to Captain Ben Stoner and Major Joel Martin (NJNG) for coordinating this very rewarding project.

Kean University was the host for the project’s second workshop, entitled “The Post 9/11 GI Bill—Progress, Potential and Pitfalls—What You Need to Know” on November 10, 2009. Dorothy Gillman, Veterans Administrator at Ramapo College, offered a comprehensive presentation on the new GI Bill noting, “In the end, this legislation will permit thousands of men and women to attend the college of their choice and earn their diplomas without facing financial hardship. It is the least we can do for our veterans who went the extra mile serving our great nation.”

Alex Manis, Deputy Director for The G.I. Go Fund was the second speaker of the day and stressed the value of the Post 9/11 GI Bill as a transitional tool for servicemembers, adding, “One of the most important tools you can have to gain long term stability is a college degree. Our veterans have worked hard to earn this entitlement and we encourage them to take advantage of this valuable stepping stone to civilian life.”

A special thanks to Dorothy and Alex for the generous contribution of their time, and to Steve Vence and Kean University for the lovely facility they donated.

And speaking of thanks ... Thanks to everyone who brought a donation for the 150th, they’re on the way!

Don’t forget ... What we do depends on your feedback... don’t forget to send us back your surveys from the November 10, 2009 event!!

OCP Wishes All a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving—
Remember to Thank a Vet!
