US Department of Veterans Affairs - Education Benefits

While the Post 9/11 GI Bill is the newest addition to education benefits for veterans, there are a variety of programs that provide financial support to active duty servicemembers and veterans.  The U.S. Veterans Affairs website has extensive information on eligibility requirements as well as an online application and other forms necessary for an initial application.  Specific program details are located here.

Reservists and National Guard Members
NJ National Guard Program


New Jersey has a generous and unique program for National Guard members, which offers free tuition for up to 15 undergraduate or graduate credits.  Learn more, here.

The Fund for Veterans Education

Established in 2001, the fund accepts applications from OIF/OEF veterans deployed for 60 days or for less than 60 days in the case of discharge due to a service-related injury or condition.  To learn more, click here.

GI Bill Aid from Military.com

The GI Bill is an education benefit earned by Active Duty, Selected Reserve and National Guard servicemembers.  The benefit is designed to help service members and eligible veterans cover the costs associated with getting an education or training.  The GI Bill has several programs and each is administered differently - depending on a person's eligibility and duty status.  Subscription to Military.com is required.  To learn more, click here.

DANTES Desktop Reference for Education Benefits

The DANTES Desktop Reference for Education Benefits will help you locate the basic education benefits available to servicemembers, depending on uniform color and status.  Listed here, are education benefits for active duty, Reserve, and Guard personnel. 

Vietnam Veterans Tuition Credit Program

The Vietnam Veterans Tuition Credit Program provides additional education benefits to veterans eligible for federally funded education programs and who served on active duty from December 31, 1960 to May 7, 1975 and who were legal residents of New Jersey at the time of induction into the Armed Forces or at the time of discharge from active service or for a period not less than one year prior to making application.  The amount of the award is $400 annually or $200 per semester for full-time attendance and $100 per semester for part-time.  For further information contact your school official in charge of veteran's affairs or by calling New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs at 609-530-6854.  Deadlines for applying are October 1 and March 1.  Link: Vietnam Veterans Tuition Credit Program
